🏙️ Why We Chose a Dubai Stopover Before the Maldives

Before heading to the Maldives, we spent three days in Dubai—and it was the perfect way to break up the long-haul travel. Flying directly to the Maldives from the U.S. or Europe can mean 20+ hours in transit, so we opted for a layover to recharge and explore.

Dubai’s location makes it an ideal stop: it’s a major international hub with direct flights to Malé, and the onward journey is just about 4 hours. After a few days of city views, desert air, and luxury comforts, we arrived in the Maldives refreshed and ready to dive into island life—literally.

✈️ Getting There: All Island Transfer Options Explained

All international flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. From there, your resort arranges transfers to your island—options vary based on distance, budget, and resort location.

🛩️ Seaplane Transfer

We took a seaplane to Niyama Private Islands, which was a breathtaking 45-minute flight over turquoise lagoons and coral atolls. Seaplanes operate only during daylight hours (6 AM–4 PM), so plan your international flight accordingly.

  • Cost: $400–$1,000 per person round trip

  • Pros: Scenic, fast, bucket-list experience

  • Cons: Expensive, limited to daylight hours

🚤 Speedboat Transfer

Ideal for resorts close to Malé (under 1.5 hours). Speedboats are more flexible and budget-friendly.

  • Cost: $150–$300 per person round trip

  • Pros: Affordable, frequent departures

  • Cons: Can be rough in bad weather, less scenic

🛫 Domestic Flight + Boat

Some resorts require a short domestic flight to a regional airport, followed by a speedboat ride.

  • Cost: $250–$500 per person

  • Pros: Accessible to remote islands, operates beyond daylight hours

  • Cons: Longer travel time, multiple legs

✈️ Private Plane Charter

For ultimate flexibility and privacy, some high-end resorts offer private plane charters from Malé or even international hubs like Dubai or Colombo.

  • Cost: $5,000+ one-way

  • Pros: Custom schedule, direct access to resort-owned airstrips

  • Cons: Extremely expensive, limited availability

🚤 Private Speedboat

Available for resorts near Malé or for guests seeking privacy.

  • Cost: Varies by resort and group size

  • Pros: Flexible timing, private experience

  • Cons: Less scenic, weather-dependent

🏨 Where We Stayed: Niyama Private Islands

Niyama is a luxury twin-island resort offering both family fun and romantic escapes. We stayed here in late November/Early December time, and it was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Highlights:

  • Explorers Kids Club: Welcomes kids aged 1–12, divided into age groups with tailored activities

  • Overwater and Beach Villas: Private pools, outdoor showers, and even popcorn makers

  • Dining: 10 restaurants including an underwater nightclub (Subsix) and treetop dining (Nest)

  • Activities: Dolphin safaris, surfing, scuba diving, glow parties, and more

💖 My Favorite Moments & Why I’d Go Again

Looking back, this trip was everything I hoped for—and more.

🌟 What I Loved Most:

  • The seaplane ride: A scenic, unforgettable experience

  • Niyama’s dining variety:

    • Lunch underwater at Subsix, surrounded by glowing coral and curious fish

    • Dinner in the treetops at Nest, with lantern-lit walkways and jungle views

    • Private beach dinner set up in the sand, with flickering torches and ocean waves

  • Ultimate stargazing: With zero light pollution, the sky was a blanket of stars—so bright we could see Saturn and Mars with the naked eye. It was peaceful, surreal, and deeply memorable.

  • Beautiful weather: The weather was abosultely beautiful and could not have asked for a better time to travel.

🧳 Would I Go Again?

Absolutely. In a heartbeat. The Maldives exceeded every expectation. I’d go again to explore a new island, try new activities, and relive that feeling of total escape.
